6/1/13: UCR Chapter and Beta Gamma Phi Honor Society come together to help a senior in need.

6/1/13: UCR Chapter and Beta Gamma Phi Honor Society come together to help a senior in need.

On Saturday, June 1st, UCR Habitat Chapter and Beta Gamma Phi Honor Society volunteers joined Habitat Riverside with our A Brush with Kindness Program to help paint the home of Robbie, a senior who lives in Riverside’s Mission Village mobile home park. Robbie has been spending more time at the doctors and the hospital which makes it difficult for her to take care of her home, especially the exterior. The exterior walls of the home were stained and in need of new paint to stay within park regulations.

Thankfully, the morning started out cool and we were able to start early to avoid the heat. Stacy, one of our regular UCR Chapter volunteers, started the day off with the devotion. We had first time volunteers in the group and went over the “Painting 101” with the rookies. Everyone broke into groups and since we had so many veteran volunteers, we even started painting the trim early on in the day. The project moved along well except for a large bush that was in the way. Brenden, one of our veteran volunteers, helped trim the bush so that we were able to use an extension pole with our nifty roller and brush holder to get the hard to reach area.

Everyone worked great together. The railings and supports were completed in no time and the whole project was done in 4 hours. Robbie loved it so much that she had tears of joy and was speechless at the sight of her newly painted home. She gladly took a photo with the group and thanked them all.

UCR Chapter volunteers and friends you rocked today!
