First Lady Rosalynn Carter dies at 96

Posted by in News | Comments Off on First Lady Rosalynn Carter dies at 96

We are deeply saddened to learn that Rosalynn Carter passed away yesterday morning November 19. She was truly a compassionate and committed advocate for families everywhere, and our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time. Along with her husband, President Jimmy Carter, she helped open the doors to brighter futures for thousands of Habitat homeowners.

In March 1984, President and Mrs. Carter worked with Habitat in Americus, Georgia. They quickly realized that Habitat’s mission closely aligned with their values, and a partnership was formed. Just a few months later, in September of that same year, the Carters led a Habitat for Humanity work group to New York, serving 19 families in need of safe, affordable housing. That was the inaugural Carter Work Project.

In June 0f 1990, Habitat Riverside Personnel and Volunteers were invited to join President and Mrs. Carter for the week-long Carter Build Project in San Diego and Tijuana titled “Milagro en la Frontera” (Miracle on the Boarder). Below are photos of the Carters from that project where seven homes were built in south-east San Diego and one hundred homes in Tijuana, by over 1000 volunteers. (Photos courtesy of Pat Morris)
