In March, Habitat for Humanity Riverside partnered with members of the Peace Corp, UCR students and local neighbors to landscape Christine’s lawn, but due to the amount of work needed, the project had to be broken up into two days. On Saturday, April 16, volunteers from the UCR Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter, UCR’s Delta Sigma Phi, and members of Wells Fargo came together to finish the job. Christine has a disability that makes it very difficult for her to maintain her yard. She recently received a warning from the city that she would be fined if she did not fix her lawn. Thanks to the support of our hardworking and dedicated volunteers, Christine now has a manageable and low maintenance yard.
The project started at 8:00 AM sharp. Daniel, Habitat Riverside’s A Brush with Kindness project coordinator, started the day with a quick prayer. He then gave an orientation about safety and how to use the tools. After the orientation, the groups broke up into smaller teams and were assigned to tasks. Volunteers pulled weeds, set landscaping fabric, and prepped for the rock cover. Towards the end of the day, everyone helped carry and spread the rock.
Halfway through the project, Christine gave out snacks to the volunteers to thank them for their hard work. Although it was a tedious project, the volunteers had a great time getting to know each other while singing along to “I’ll make a man out of you” from Disney’s Mulan.
A big thanks and hug to all our volunteers, we could not have done it without you!
