8/17/13: Knights of Columbus & HFHR Volunteers Team Up!

St. Bernadine’s Knights of Columbus Men’s Group and Habitat volunteers joined forces to help paint the home of Tim and Linda who live in Corona’s Green River Village Mobile Home Park. Tim and Linda are both disabled seniors living on fixed incomes and are unable to maintain their home due to their disabilities. Their home is the first to be painted in Green River Village with our A Brush with Kindness program. The home was in need of TLC especially with the previous painter using the wrong kind of caulk adding to the paint job looking old and faded.

August is always one of Habitat for Humanity Riverside’s busiest and hottest months. Start time was 7:30 a.m. and everyone arrived on time to beat the heat. Steve from the Knights of Columbus gave the morning devotion after the safety and painting orientation.  Usually groups break into 4 teams to paint the walls and then move on to the trim, but to try and beat the heat we had extra team paint the trim right away.

Almost all the volunteers had worked on previous Habitat projects allowing the teams to move quickly. There were several rose bushes that needed trimming and so the trim team got right to work on those. They were also able to cut down a small tree at another home in the park that is scheduled to be painted in September. The home had very high peaks at the front and rear of the house so ladder holders were used just to be safe. Marty, Steve aka “Tall Guy” and Michael did great with these areas.  Michael one of our regular Corona volunteers brought energy bars for everyone to munch on. We had plenty of cold water to keep everyone going as the day got hotter.

A few of our volunteers had to leave early because of family appointments, but the rest of the team kept on going. Tim and Linda’s home was completed by 12:15pm. What a great job! We ended on a good note and everyone was still able to enjoy the rest of their weekend.  Linda and Tim loved the new look of their home and thanked all of the volunteers while taking the group photo.

Thank you Knights of Columbus and Habitat volunteers! You did great on our first paint day in Green River Village!
