6/19/2013: One Summer of Service

Filled with determination to change one’s life, East Hills Church dedicates each summer to making a difference in their community. This year, East Hills Church partnered with Habitat for Humanity, Riverside for their summer of service. Church volunteers, ranging from ages 9 to 69, gave their time, energy and skills to help Riverside homeowner John and Linda. John, a Vietnam veteran and former P.O.W and his wife have lived in the home for over 20 years. The home was in need of exterior repairs due to water damage and the East Hills Church volunteers were the perfect group to help out.

On the first day of the project, EHC volunteers arrived in the red “One Summer” shirts ready to work. Among the group were many veterans working alongside their fellow veteran, John and his wife Linda. They were hard at work replacing and painting the trim. Adriana, our Bank of America Student Leader intern, checked everyone in and took photos before joining in on the fun.

The next work day, the EHC volunteers came back and worked on scraping the stucco before painting began on the home. Linda had picked a bright, warm color that would make the home look great. Brian, the team leader, and Richard, one of the veterans touched up the trim and applied a second coat where it was needed. Larry, another veteran helped with painting the edges where the wall color met the trim and everyone else did great job brushing and rolling.

At the end of the project, Brian got everyone into a circle and gave a closing devotion for the family and group for a truly successful mission project. John and Linda proudly took a photo with the East Hills Community Church volunteers and admired the new look of their home.  Thank you East Hills Church volunteers. Mission Completed!
