3/2/13: UCR Habitat Finishes a Santiago Estates Paint Job in No Time!

Saturday was an amazing day to paint a home so what the heck, we painted another home! The Habitat Chapter at UCR came together to help out Iraqi War veteran Aisha who recently purchased a used mobile home in Santiago Estates in Moreno Valley. Aisha is disabled but that doesn’t stop her from helping others. Her daughter and two younger sisters also live in the home with her. The place needed a little exterior sprucing up and sprucing up we did.

It actually was a little warm on Saturday which is good and bad. Good for the paint and dry times, not so great for the volunteers out there in the sun! But this crew wasn’t going to let a little sun get in the way of their work and they got right into it. The UCR chapter has become old pros at this painting thing and they made this project look easy. Aisha and her family jumped in to help where they could and Beatrice, one of our Habitat homeowners to be was at it again working on her sweat equity requirements. Because of the heat, everyone made sure they took plenty of breaks and drank lots of water.

Stacy was in charge of the front and took care of the high parts of the walls. Eric took care of the patio side. Beatrice and Kelvin took care of the back.  Johansa, also known as Lefty, took care of the driveway walls.  She was a little hesitant on the ladder but did great. Everyone else worked on the lower parts and moved quickly.

Aisha and her family made sure they thanked every volunteer for all the help as the group loaded the truck and headed back to their school lives.
