11/09/13: UCR Habitat Chapter Can’t Stay Away From Donating Their Time

For the second time in less than a month the UCR Habitat Chapter partnered with Habitat for Humanity Riverside to paint the home of Remedies and Don Jose. The couple lives in Village Riverside mobile home park located at the west end of Riverside. Their home which they purchased about four years ago was in need of some repairs and the park management cited them to have the home painted. Fortunately, Don Jose was able to take care of those repairs on his own. Remedies and Don Jose work full time jobs, however their incomes are not enough to cover all the expenses for home repairs. That’s the reason the UCR Habitat Chapter was eager to help the couple bring their house up to code.

This past Saturday the volunteers all marched over to Remedies’ home. Jazzy, UCR Habitat Chapter President and the rest of the UCR Chapter volunteers showed up right on time along with Denise, a future Habitat homeowner who came out again to work off her sweat equity requirement. Since Denise and most of the UCR Chapter group had volunteered with us before it made setup and orientation run smoothly. The students already knew the routine and they self-managed their work groups and assigned areas. There were a couple new faces but we all worked together to make sure they stayed safe and painted properly.

Brandon, one of Habitat’s former work study interns and now vice president of the UCR Habitat Chapter took charge in painting the high peak areas of the home. It is quickly becoming his specialty and he did a great job as usual. Don Jose come out and helped with the high trim as well. The day quickly warmed up but the group planned the day perfectly so they could end the day in the shade. That is exactly how the day ended, everyone painting the patio railing and front door entry area. Once these areas were done a quality check of the home was completed. Then the truck was loaded and Don Jose took a group photo with the volunteers.

Remedies was working and therefore was not able to be there for the project, Don Jose assured everyone that he would tell her how hard and well they worked together to paint their home.

Well done! It is always a pleasure to work with such a fun group and we will see you on the 23rd for your third project this month!  We know it will be a great one, too.
