11/3/12: Jasso’s MBA Student Volunteers

Once again, Professor Sean Jasso and his MBA students at UCR came out ready to work on Saturday to help Habitat Riverside paint the exterior of a mobile home belonging to a low income family in need of A Brush with Kindness. Together they painted the home of Felix and Rosa who live in the Santiago Estates mobile home park located in Moreno Valley.  Felix is the sole bread winner of his family of six.  He could not afford the needed repairs to his home or to have it painted and had been cited by the park about the exterior of his unit.  As part of the usual prep work for painting, several volunteers removed and replaced rotted trim and siding to make sure the home is safe environment for Felix and his family.

As always, the UCR group arrived all at once and was ready to get right to work. Fortunately, the weather was really nice, a perfect day for painting. All 36 volunteers were placed in groups and got right to work on their assigned walls and areas. Since this unit was a single wide mobile home and a bit smaller than most of the projects we tackle, we were able to repaint the entire fence around the property as well as painting the home. A large tree in the front got some much needed pruning with the help of Rosa, her daughter Jasmin, and some of the volunteers. Rosa and her daughter also pitched in painting some walls of the house. There was plenty to keep everyone busy with two sheds and the three sets of stairs and patio railings.

The family dogs that were in the big pen which are usually very frisky and vocal could only sit and watch the crowd of busy people milling around their home.

Monique, one of our Habitat homeowners who is working on completion of her sweat equity joined the group to help out.  Even though there were lots of people crowded around a small area the day went great.  It went so well that the home was completed in just three hours. I guess these groups of MBA students were all work and no play!  Thanks UCR MBA students for giving up your Saturday morning to help Felix and Rosa and their family. Job well done!
