10/26/13: UCR Habitat Chapter Comes Back Strong!

Early Saturday morning, the UCR Habitat for Humanity Chapter came out to help paint a home at Mission Village Mobile Home Park in Riverside. The morning started out a little chilly, but that was no challenge for the UCR students. They were ready to get down to business and help homeowner Sandy, a widow living on her late husband’s social security benefits. Her home had never been painted so the park had cited her to have it painted but she could not afford it on her income. The original paint on the walls was weathered and faded. So it was Habitat for Humanity Riverside and  UCR Habitat for Humanity Chapter to the rescue!

All 22 of them got right to work, getting out rollers and paint brushes and filling their trays with paint. David and Brian were assigned the painting job on the awning. For a quick minute, Joe our Project Coordinator gave the boys a scare saying they were painting the awning the wrong color! Fortunately, chaos was averted and they were reassured they were doing a great job and the color for the awnings were correct! Phew, that was a close one.

The rest of the UCR Habitat Team worked vigorously throughout the whole house trying to get every little crevice painted. Brandon, a UCR Habitat for Humanity member and former Habitat Work-Study intern was put to work right away by Joe and Dave getting the awnings off . Sandy, checked up on the volunteers and kept commenting on how great the house looked!

As the volunteer day was wrapping up, the group took a big group photo around Sandy. She was just ecstatic at the finished look of her home. It looked just like new! She was very thankful for all the hard work the students put into painting the house. Just as the UCR Habitat team were about to call it a day, they saw the awnings still lying out on side of the house. Uh oh, we forgot to put them back up! Jazzy rounded up her team for one last job of the day, with some help from Joe, they got the awnings up in no time! It was great to have the UCR Habitat for Humanity Chapter back with us for another amazing paint day. Thanks again, UCR Habitat Chapter!
