Sysco Volunteers Help A Veteran Family

Bruce and Catherine tried their best to maintain their home, but for various reasons, they were unable to maintain the outer appearance of their mobile home. They received a notice that their home needed to be painted by park management and having nowhere else to turn, they reached out to Habitat for Humanity Riverside for help. Bruce is a veteran who always wanted to serve our great nation and did so right after high school. Today, he works at a school district while his wife, Catherine, is retired from San Bernardino County.

On August 26th, 2017,  volunteers from Sysco joined us to help Bruce and Catherine. As they painted, they had the opportunity to talk to and get to know the family. It is important that volunteers understand that they aren’t just there to paint a building or pull some weeds. Every paint stroke, every wall painted, and every completed project helps give a family a safe, decent, and affordable place to live. These volunteers worked hard to give Bruce and Catherine a beautiful place to live. The family was filled with gladness and expressed their thankfulness for this gift.

“It is particularly humbling to serve a veteran.” Families in need of affordable housing live everywhere, housing insecurity touches nearly half of adults at some point in their lives. Veterans are not exempt from this. “They served our nation, how can we not serve them willingly and lovingly?” Daniel Anchondo, A Brush with Kindness Coordinator.

Thank you to Sysco for coming out and serving Bruce and Catherine and thank you, Bruce, for serving America.
