6/22/2013: Habitat Volunteers Show Their Dedication

A Brush with Kindness paint days are always interesting when we do a call out to our dedicated volunteers who have signed up through our Volunteer Up site. 18 individuals from the Riverside county area and as far as Oceanside, came out to help paint the home of Karen, who lives in Corona’s Countrywood Estates mobile home park with her daughter and granddaughter. Karen recently retired due to her company’s downsizing and her daughter was recently laid off due to outsourcing.  Karen is living on her Social Security income and was not able to afford to have the home painted. The home had several areas of water damaged trim and skirting.

All of our volunteers met at Karen’s home, and joining us was Clarinda, our newest homeowner, and her family. She and her family were helping her complete the sweat equity time as part of the home purchase requirements. Most of the volunteers had painted with us before which allowed us to quickly break into groups to start painting. The patio and drive side teams moved quickly using extension poles to cover almost all of the walls without ladders.

Karen wanted to stay for the entire paint day, but promised her grandson she would be at his little league baseball game. Therefore, we took the group photo during the painting day and thanked everyone as she drove off.  Karen called the Habitat Riverside office later that day to thank the volunteer group again and let us know how much she loves the look of her home.
