3/27/2013: Interact Club Gets Active!

Rubidoux Interact Club from Rubidoux High School and Habitat Riverside joined together  on Wednesday the 27th to help Daniel and Marta, homeowners in the Old Plantation Mobile Home Park. Daniel and Marta and are Pastors for the Ever More church. This couple’s income relies on donations from Church members so there isn’t much to spare for a new paint job and the really needed it.  The Interact club students gave up part of their spring vacation time to help paint their home.

Most of the students were under the age of 18 and cannot work on ladders so we had to get a little creative to make sure everything got done. So we held a mini painting 101 class for the group, then got everyone equipped with extension poles and lots of rollers.  Those with the poles took care of the high areas and the others took care of the lower areas.  The 18 year olds were given ladder safety education and took to the ladders to handle the areas the roller crew could not get to. And then Ms. Lisa, the group’s teacher and counselor helped with the high trim and the front peak.  And she was great at it.

Daniel, the homeowner also joined in to handle the trim and high spots. A second wave of students showed up a little late due to their schedules and went right to work on the finishing touches.  Daniel and Marta were so grateful that they went and got lunch for the group. Pizzas and cold drinks go fast with High School students!  Once the home was finished, everyone had to have a photo in front of it.

Thanks Interact Club, for devoting time out of your spring break to help out a deserving couple.

The students and I feel honored to have been apart of the great work Habitat for Humanity does every day in our communities. Dave was an excellent teacher! His clear direction, organized approach and easy-going attitude, made the job particularly enjoyable.

Thank you for allowing our students to serve. We are a new Interact club, which is sponsored by the Jurupa Rotary chapter, and we look forward to serving in the future.

    Lisa,

Habitat for Humanity Riverside thanks you for those kind words. It was a pleasure to work with the Interact Club. The paint day was truly fun while serving a deserving family. The students were eager and ready to help in any way and it was evident in everything they did on the paint day. I know we will be partnering again for future Habitat projects.
