11/26/13: Ramona HS Students were busy bees on a mission!

Ramona High School students dedicated some of their Thanksgiving break to help two Riversiders this past Tuesday. About 20 students donated their time to help Ed and Dorothy who are low income seniors dealing with medical issues due to their age and a car accident. Like most seniors trying to make ends meet while living on Social Security income, Ed and Dorothy could not afford to paint their home when park rules dictated that it needed to be repainted. That’s where the Ramona High School Habitat for Humanity Chapter members came to the rescue!

Student advisors – Christine, Nicole and Marissa brought the students to the work site early Tuesday morning. Most of the students who volunteered were seasoned painters who have helped many homeowners in Habitat for Humanity Riverside’s service area over the last three years. This made the set up easy and the students took to the home like busy bees on a mission. They were joined by some family members of future Habitat homeowners who are working to complete their sweat equity requirements before they can purchase their new home.

Having the extra help from some adults was important since most of the Ramona Chapter students are under 18 so they need to keep their feet firmly planted on the ground. No ladder work for them. But that never seems to stop them from pitching in and getting the job done. They are getting really good at this painting gig. Painting to help others, or for your own home is a great thing, but it’s hard work and not what they want to do for a living so we encourage them to STAY focused on completing their education. That way painting stays fun!

The entire project was completed in about 4 hours and Ed & Dorothy were very happy to see the new coat of paint on their home. Not a bad way to spend a day outside the classroom! Thanks again for all you do Ramona Habitat Chapter members. You’re the best.
