Members of the Wesley United Methodist Church along with Mr. Bernard King’s English Class from Rancho Verde High School were up bright and early Saturday morning ready to paint! They painted a mobile home at Mission Village Mobile Home Park owned by a disabled veteran named Mitch. Mitch’s home still had the original paint on it so it just needed some good old TLC. Mitch uses a wheelchair and gets things done with help from his daughter. Although he can get around the house pretty well, it would have been a difficult task to paint his house by himself. Since he is living off of his social security, it would have been hard for him to afford a paint job. Luckily, Habitat for Humanity Riverside and our amazing volunteers were here to help.
Although the day started out a bit cold, everyone got right to work. The paint day started out with the usual devotion and safety talk. Most of the students were under 18 which meant they were not allowed to get on ladders. As a result of this, we brought out the extension poles so the students could reach the higher portions of the mobile home. Nothing was going to stop them from finishing the job!
The volunteer group was led by Pastor Debbie and other members of the church who were all patrons of A Brush with Kindness paint days. They have all gone through quite a few volunteer days so they were practically pros! They all got right to work on the house without any hesitation. It is always a pleasure to have volunteers come back to help us! Since there were only a few adults in the group of volunteers, Dave made sure they were all on ladders getting all the trim and higher areas of the house. We even borrowed a few members from the UCR Habitat for Humanity Chapter to help out with the higher sections of the house. Good thing the UCR Chapter volunteers were only two houses down working on another mobile home with Joe. Arraceion, one of our future Habitat homeowners, came out to help paint as well. He was fulfilling his sweat equity hours, which are a part of the requirements in becoming a Habitat homeowner.
At the end of the day, Mitch came out to take a group photo with us. He was very thankful that we had the chance to come out and spruce up his home. He loved the results!
