2/17/12: UEI College Volunteer Day

Students from UEI College arrived in good spirits Friday morning to paint a mobile home that was in desperate need of a new coat. Kathy, Helping Hands Project Manager, was thrilled that the wind had died down from the previous day. She had gone out in those hurricane winds the day before to reattach some of the siding on that mobile home. But this volunteer day, the weather was ideal for painting! UEI volunteers had a unique experience: they worked side by side with our new Habitat Homeowners who were volunteering to complete their sweat equity. Mobile homeowners were very grateful for all the students who worked on their home…great job everyone!

2/15/12: Volunteers @ De La Vista

This house was a challenge from the start, and the deeper we dug, the more we found. We were lucky to fill up a mid-week volunteer day within two days of posting it online, and even luckier to end up with such a great team. They dug, they hammered, they cut, they screwed, they wheeled, they sweated, until two bins of cement and brick were overflowing, and the rest of the “junk” was in another bin. We are so lucky to have such an active and hard working base of volunteers. What makes it even sweeter, is that this was the first time for several of the team members to volunteer with us. Great job! You guys rock! Or should I say BRICK……

What happens when two Habitat dedicated volunteer groups get together? One fantastic volunteer day! The UCR Habitat Campus Chapter met with Ramona High School’s Habitat Club to paint a mobile home in King Arthur Estates. Thanks to faithful Habitat volunteers like the students of UCR and RHS, one more mobile home owner is enjoying their much-needed, freshly painted home.

2/11/12:Wells Fargo Demo Day

Simply stated, this volunteer group worked hard. Wells Fargo volunteers were at it again at another rehabilitation project in Jurupa Valley. Kayla, Wells Fargo representative heading the day, brought a much needed donation for the project from the Wells Fargo Foundation! Thanks to Starbucks #10666′s (Riverside store on Blaine & Iowa) coffee donation, Habitat Riverside tried to fuel up the volunteers for their physical day. Despite sledge hammers pounding and bricks flying, Wells Fargo volunteers delicately took apart a foreclosed home. Bathrooms were disassembled, flooring was ripped up, shoddy brickwork was removed and a dangerous trellis with vines galore was torn down. Only because Habitat Riverside had a volunteer group that was willing to work so hard did we accomplish so much demolition in five hours. See the destruction below.

2/4/12- UCR ASB at King Arthur

The UCR ASB group showed their commitment to the community by volunteering their time in King Arthur Mobile Home Park. The group enthusiastically painted a home of an artist couple and added an exuberant blue to the trim to reflect the artistic nature of the homeowners. Happy Homeowners + Happy Volunteers = A successful volunteer day!

1/28/12-The Well Volunteer Day

The Well @ Harvest volunteered in King Arthur mobile home park. Our new Habitat family, the Martinez’s, was volunteering that day for their Sweat Equity and was pleasantly surprised this day since The Well is their church group! All volunteers from The Well generously donated their hours to the Martinez family’s Sweat Equity to help them finish their volunteer hours before their home is finished. Habitat had a happy mobile home owner and Habitat family that day!

1/18/2012-Fresh & Easy

Fresh & Easy made quite an impression with the Habitat Riverside community this week! First 10 Fresh & Easy employees volunteered in Moreno Valley on the 18th for a Helping Hands day, and then they sent delicious food for our TEDx viewing event at the office. It was cold and cloudy day to volunteer last Wednesday, but the paint job got done. What a great day everyone!

1/16/12-Ramona HS

The Habitat Club at Ramona High School used their MLK day off to landscape for their first volunteer day in 2012. As usual, the club did a great job and left one happy mobile home owner. Afterwards, the club invited Habitat Riverside to their school to receive a big check from their campus fundraiser. Their donation will further our mission of building affordable houses for low income families. The Ramona High School Habitat Club’s hard work in King Arthur and their donation are great examples of how our youth can make a positive impact on our community. Keep up the great work!

1/14/2012-UCR Habitat Chapter

Our Habitat Chapter at the UCR campus really outdid themselves last Saturday on their first volunteer day of 2012. Just four hours of their Saturday changed someone’s life. They did such a great job even the owner was in tears by the end of the day.
