THE FIRST AFFORDABLE GREEN, SOLAR POWERED HOUSE BY HABITAT FOR HUMANITY RIVERSIDE.Habitat for Humanity Riverside builds GREEN, HEALTHY, ENERGY EFFICIENT, AFFORDABLE houses for families in need. They are "GREEN" because they are constructed from renewable building materials. They are HEALTHY because they use non-toxic products in the interior design. They are ENERGY EFFICIENT because they use the sun to create electricity used by the homeowner for energy saving appliances and lighting. They are AFFORDABLE because they are sold to a selected family for the cost of construction on a no-interest loan, the exterior of the house requires little maintenance, and the utility expense is more than 50% lower than average. Why build GREEN? Our policy at Habitat for Humanity Riverside is to be good stewards of our natural resources and our planet. We simply believe in respecting what God gave us – as well as respecting each other. Our objective is to build houses that are both good and healthy places to live in and are good and healthy to the place we live on. So we build affordable healthy homes using available “GREEN” technology. Why do we do this? We build houses that are both affordable to buy and affordable to live in because we believe, as did founders of our country, that owning a house can become a home that will nurture a family and inspire their good citizenship. How do we do this? We sell our houses to qualified* families with volunteer labor, for the cost of construction. Our staff is supported by our home improvement/hardware “ReStore” sales. Our donor’s funds are then free to be dedicated to build houses. The houses are sold to a qualified family for a low monthly no-interest mortgage that repays the cost to construct the house. ![]() This house will be the first affordable Habitat for Humanity "smart" house in Riverside - and in the nation - that is solar powered for energy efficiency and made of sustainable recycled building materials that will be certified "GREEN" under national U.S. Green Building Council, LEED standards. It will be built under the sponsorship of the City of Riverside, members of the U.S. Green Building Council, Cal. Baptist University, and the dedicated Habitat staff, volunteers, and donors, for a qualified family selected by Habitat for Humanity Riverside. You can see this house, the materials used, our donors and our volunteers by looking at our pictures in our gallery showing our affordable “GREEN” house being built. Is it possible that all new houses can be built this way? Why not?
