Graham Street - Moreno Valley

June 2010

Saturday July 10, 2010
The day started at 5:30 when Cindy from the City of Moreno Valley arrived at the site with home-made breakfast burritos and donuts for the volunteers. What a great way to start the day off right.
Volunteers from the City of Moreno Valley and Bank of America started arriving by 5:45. Everyone had to take care of the paperwork, sign in sheets and waivers and then select their safety gear and equipment: hard hats, safety goggles, gloves and hammers. As volunteers continued to arrive, Jennifer Gaston who is one of the future homeowners got the opportunity to meet with the volunteers as they enjoyed coffee and a light breakfast fare to get them going. The Bank of America team was assigned to work on her future home.
Promptly at 7:00 a.m., Executive Director Karin Roberts gathered the volunteers and the professionals to welcome everyone. Steve Pep, Habitat’s Construction Supervisor then launched into the all important safety instructions and led the team in prayer for a safe, productive, rewarding day.
The Moreno Valley team worked on the Garcia home and the Bank of America team worked on the Gaston home. Each team was paired up with two professional framers from Inland Empire Framing to guide them along. By 7:45, the Moreno Valley team had the first wall framed and set into place and the race was on!
It quickly became a friendly competition to see which team could finish first. By the 11:00 lunch break, the Bank of America team was almost done, with only a few interior walls and the final garage wall left to complete. Everyone broke to enjoy the wonderful lunch thoughtfully provided by volunteers from Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Moreno Valley.
The hot weather didn’t seem to faze the volunteers who made quick work of their lunch and were back to the job at hand without delay.
By 1:00, the rough framing on both houses was complete!

Finally – some good news about area housing!

Riverside, CA. October 31, 2009

Habitat for Humanity Riverside and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans dedicated a recently completed home in Rubidoux and celebrated this exciting event with the public.

Times are tough economically. There’s no doubt about that, even in Riverside but that hasn’t stopped Habitat for Humanity Riverside and local members of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans from completing construction on a home with a family in urgent need of one. Now it’s time to celebrate the home they’ve helped build!

Volunteers, Habitat for Humanity representatives, Thrivent Financial representatives and members, local Riverside County representatives, and, of course, the excited partner family gathered at the home in Rubidoux to honor the hard work, the generous financial backing and the community support that made this home possible. The Leader Family with Exec Director Karin Roberts The homebuyers—the Leader family—are more than a little eager to move into their new home. They have completed 500 hours of “sweat equity” helping to build the home, a basic tenet of Habitat for Humanity.

They will repay the zero interest mortgage over a period of 30-40 years, illustrating Habitat for Humanity’s objective to give families a “hand up” rather than a “hand out.”
