1/03/15: Starting the New Year with a Helping Hand

To start the New Year, two groups of volunteers from Sweat Equity came out to help paint a home for a resident in Moreno valley. The volunteers fought off the cold weather and met on the morning of January third at Country Squire Mobile Estates. Mariela and Andrew both brought a group of volunteers to assist Habitat for Humanity Riverside with A Brush for Kindness to help bring a new paint job to a home that was in need a fresh coat.

The group was eager to help out and paint Sherrie’s home. Sherrie has physical limitations that restrict her ability to paint her own home and was so grateful and thanked the crew before they started. Her face lit up as she saw the first stroke of paint being applied to her home.

The day went smooth as both groups worked together as a team to get this job done. First a safety brief was conducted by Daniel the Brush for Kindness Project Coordinator. As soon as everyone understood the safety procedures everyone proceeded to place protective mats around the edges of the home to prevent paint from staining the floor. All the volunteers started by applying a light grey coat of paint to the home. As two wall were close to being completely covered in paint, the volunteers split up to cover other areas of the home. Some volunteers detailed small areas that were either missed or hard to reach while the others applied a dark grey coat of paint for the trim, gutters and doors of the home. Near the end, some volunteers touched up areas of the home where dark grey paint dripped on the light grey and the areas that were missed.

As we ended the day around noon, Sherrie thanked the volunteers once again and took a group picture. Sherrie’s home was painted quick and efficiently thanks to Mariela, Andrew and the group of volunteer’s they brought with them.
